Giving blood
Efforts are being made in many countries to ensure that donor blood does not contain the parasite that causes Chagas disease. Such screening is essential and should be routine in all countries where people affected by Chagas are living because blood donation is another possible route of transmission of this disease.
However, since the implementation of screening and control measures is not at the same level in every country, people who have received blood donations in Latin America or from a Latin American donor are advised to see their doctor for a check-up if they have any doubts.
People who know that they are infected with the parasite should not donate blood except in very exceptional circumstances. If they do donate in such circumstances, the medical personnel should always be informed. Similarly, the practice guidelines of each country (if any exist) should always be followed and in general the standards set by the WHO should also be applied.
